Dr. James F. Smith is a Professor of the Practice in the Institute for the Economy and the Future at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. He is also a research professor in Western Carolina's business school, and first chief economist for Parsec Financial Management. With over 30 years' experience as an economic forecaster, he serves on the Bloomberg, Business Week and Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia forecasting panels, and participates in the National Association for Business Economics and USA Today quarterly surveys of forecasters, as well as the Wall Street Journal economic outlook surveys. He has been an economist and analyst at the Federal Reserve Board, the National Association of REALTORS, Sears, Roebuck and Co., Union Carbide Corporation, the University of Texas at Austin, and Wharton Econometric Forecasting Associates (now Global Insight). He is also a member and past president of several professional economic associations in the U.S. and was co-chair of the European Council of Economists from 2001-2003.
